Community Spirit

On a cold day in November, Messmer students helped to warm up the City of Milwaukee for the holiday season. Fourteen students from the second and fourth grades participated in decorating a Christmas tree in Cathedral Square as part of the Milwaukee Holiday Lights Festival. The students decorated the tree with ornaments that they had created with our 2005-06 spiritual theme of “Seek God with All Your Heart.” Hot cocoa and cookies were served as the students decorated with their ornaments made of straws, pâpier maché, popsicle sticks and other household items. “Community Spirit Park”, as Cathedral Park is being called, is sponsored by the Milwaukee Downtown Business Improvement District, and Messmer was one of thirty schools chosen to participate in the decorating project.

Tracing the Steps of Lewis and Clark
“January 1st 1804-Snow about an inch deep. Cloudy to day, a woman…several men come from the Countrey to see us, they bring Sugare to trade.” (Journals of the Lewis and Clark Expedition)

In similarly cold conditions to the original expedition, 97 Messmer High School students began a trek in nearby Lake Park to reenact the steps of Lewis and Clark as part of the bicentennial celebration of this historic journey.

History teacher, Karina Hunt, explained, “Each 'Corps of Discovery' will be using a compass and direction cards to explore the park and draw an accurate map of their trail. Along the way, they are to sketch plants and animals they come across and keep a journal of their daily discoveries.” Struggling through the cold temperatures and light snow falling added to the realism of the conditions the early pioneers must have faced. “I can't imagine being out here for 2 years,” remarked some of the students.

Important Year End Contributions

This Christmas season, we give thanks to the many generous donors who support Messmer Catholic Schools. This year we must raise $1.2 million dollars to cover scholarships, supplies, and extra-curricular activities. It is only through your support that we are able to continue proving the value of Learning, Faith and Leadership to over 1,000 urban youth. Please remember Messmer this holiday season by following this link to a printable response card and mail in your pledge or contribution today and help us continue this vital ministry.

We continue to be thankful for your support and keep you in our daily prayers during this holiday season.

May God bless you and keep you,
