Order of Friars Minor, Capuchin

Brother Bob Smith has been a member of the Order of Friars Minor-Capuchin since 1979. He is a native of Chicago, Illinois. Br. Smith currently is stationed in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, at St. Conrad’s Friary. Br. Bob Smith was elected in June of 1999 as the second African American to the Provincial Council of the Capuchin Province of St. Joseph in its 142-year history. In June of 2002, Smith was elected Minister Provincial, the first lay brother and first African American in the history of the U.S. Capuchins. After working for the Michigan Department of Corrections as a Parole Officer and as a juvenile detention home chaplain, Br. Bob was named as the 12th Principal of Messmer High School in 1987 and served in this position until 1997. In January of 1995, Br. Bob was named as the first President of Messmer High School and now serves as President of Messmer Catholic Schools – a K4-12th grade system of over 1,000 students. In 2003, Br. Smith was elected as the Archbishop’s Director of Faith and Formation for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, a position he served in until June of 2006. His responsibilities included guidance and supervision of several departments including the 135 schools of the Archdiocese with approximately 62,000 students.

In 1981, Br. Bob received a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. In 1983, he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Sociology/Economics from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Br. Bob has a Master of Arts degree in Administrative Leadership and Supervision from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, earned in 1987. In addition, he holds teaching certificates for grades 7-12 in Broad Field Social Studies, Political Science, Psychology, Economics, and a State of Wisconsin Principal’s license. Br. Bob has done graduate level study at Harvard University, Marquette University, Seattle University, St. Bonaventure’s University, the University of Virginia, and has C.P.E. Certification from Catholic University of America.

Br. Smith is a frequent and popular keynote speaker at colleges, universities, and workshops across the United States. He has conducted training workshops for the United States Attorney General's Office, the Justice Department, the F.B.I., and other government and corporate groups.
